Default VAG 1.8 Turbo Engine-Differences in 180BHP & 225BHP vers

My mate has just bought a TT with the 180BHP engine, last night he asked me what the difference is between the 180BHP version and the 225BHP, because they are both the same 1.8T engine. I told him I thought difference was probably in the engine managment and maybe the cams, as I think the turbo's on both engines are the same, I could be completely wrong though, so if anyone could give me the definitive answer I would appreciate it.

I'm sure Stu or Chip will know!

Looked at this engine for the maestro.

I think its ecu and turbo, cant remember what reyland said but he did say start with the 225 from the beginning and there good for 350 on standard internals, and in a 800kg car would be a riot

Thanks guys!

Following on, is it relatively simple to bring the 180 engine up to 225 spec?

i think its just a chip, or ecu change

pretty sure the engines are identical

and good for over 400 on std internals

You may find that the 180bhp engine has a K03 sport turbo

The 225 & 210 engines have a K04 turbo

The maps will be diff also

The 225 is a much stronger motor it can run up 350 bhp as it is the map turbo and internals are all differnt . 225 is a BAM engine.

The turbo is different between the two cars as I have the poverty 150bhp motor. As I get stuff to break though power will be hiked.

Not sure on the exact differences but my missus' 225 TT kills me mates 180 every time!!! It may be the turbo as said above and possibly the ECU.

ask power engineering about it as I seem to remember them having a mess up with one. I am sure the pistons were different and whenthey bolted all the otside engine parts from a 225 to a 180 it went pop. remember chris todd telling me about it few years back when I was there getting a car set up.

Don't the 225's need very expensive oil or higher grade oil too?

As martin said also the downpipes are very different so bolt on a ko4 to a ko3 engine requires work.
Not just a straight swap.

the 225 has 9.0:1 comp ratio the 180 is less.
there are lots of small changes between the two.

so from what I can see on there would it be worth searching for an AUM managed car to get the K03s and the larger injectors for mine, then a remap?
